TAHLEQUAH, OK — The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians proudly extends its heartfelt congratulations to tribal member Angel Goodrich on her induction into the National American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame.

Angel Goodrich, born in Glendale, Arizona, and a proud member of the United Keetoowah Band, has been a shining example of perseverance, excellence, and leadership both on and off the basketball court. Her trailblazing journey from Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah – where she became the school’s first Division I athletic scholarship recipient and led the Lady Indians to three state championships – to her historic career in the WNBA, has inspired Native youth across the country.

Overcoming two ACL injuries in college, Goodrich not only set the University of Kansas’ all-time assist record but became one of the most decorated athletes in Jayhawk history. Her selection as the 29th overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft made her the highest-drafted Native American player at that time, a milestone that resonated deeply across Indian Country.

On Friday, May 2, the First Americans Museum hosted the National American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony – a celebration of Native athletes and their many accomplishments. Chief Jeff Wacoche, Secretary Caleb Grimmett-Smith, and District Representatives Cliff Wofford and Janelle Adair attended the event to honor and celebrate one of our own, Angel Goodrich, as she received this historic recognition.

“Angel Goodrich embodies the spirit of resilience and excellence that defines our people,” said Chief Jeff Wacoche of the United Keetoowah Band. “Her achievements reflect her unwavering determination, and her legacy as a role model continues to uplift the next generation of Keetoowah and Native athletes. We are beyond proud of her induction into the National American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame – it is a momentous and well-deserved honor.”

Today, Angel continues to serve her community as a firefighter in Tulsa and remains closely connected to the game by officiating youth basketball, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to mentorship and service.

The United Keetoowah Band celebrates Angel Goodrich’s enduring impact and congratulates her on this amazing recognition. She has brought great pride to the UKB and has paved the way for others to follow.
