TULSA, Ok. Fresh off the release of her first full-length album in seven years, Oklahoma songwriter, musician and interdisciplinary artist Kalyn Fay will record new music before two audiences of just 50 guests each during IN SESSION at The Church Studio on Thursday, July 30.
IN SESSION stands alone in North America as a quarterly live-recording experience that places ticketed audiences inside a working studio alongside the musicians and engineers creating the session. Fay will perform at 6 and 8 p.m. with Jake Lynn, Stephen Lee, Josh Nanna and Olivia McGraw. With no PA system or conventional stage separating listeners from the performers, every note, breath and spontaneous exchange is captured as it happens. Guests will hear every voice and instrument through professional Shure studio headphones and the direct studio mix, while their presence becomes an integral part of the recording process, even helping shape the acoustics of the Live Room.
“IN SESSION was inspired by JJ Cale’s 1979 concert video, In Session at The Paradise Studios, recorded and filmed in Leon Russell’s studio in Los Angeles, and a headphone concert by Snarky Puppy,” said Stanton Doyle, Executive Director of The Church Studio. “The concept illuminates the recording process for audiences while creating lasting recordings for performers. Headphones, vintage analog gear, skilled engineers and the room’s intimacy make the experience truly unique.”
Fay is a Cherokee Nation citizen and is of Muscogee descent. Her work moves through songwriting, visual art, curation and education, drawing from place, family, community and the complex relationship between identity and home.
“I am honored to be able to perform in an important and historic space that many incredible songwriters and bands have come through, especially as a Native person,” Kalyn said. “I am looking forward to performing live with the band and capturing the evolution of songs off previous records, as well as a few new ones.”
Released April 3 through Tulsa-based Horton Records, ᎠᏫᏒᏅ (Garden) follows Fay’s albums Bible Belt and Good Company. The collection explores family, heritage, belonging and the Oklahoma landscape, with songs performed in English and Cherokee.
Past IN SESSION artists include John R. Miller, The Greyhounds, King Cabbage Brass Band, Red Dirt Rangers, SOUP, Damion Shade and the Boom Bap Chorus, and Maria Kim and Company.
